Balancing connection to the neighbourhood with a sense of seclusion and refuge, Studio Bright’s design for Derby Street embodies a level of care and craft typically reserved for single residential projects. Planned across multiple levels, each apartment is defined by robust and enduring materials, thoughtful layouts and generous spaces.
The layered facade creates opportunities for generously proportioned outdoor terraces — spaces that extend the homes beyond their interiors, offering a sense of openness and connection to the environment. Each terrace balances privacy with outlook, providing residents with versatile outdoor areas for relaxation and entertaining.
The Derby Street entrance provides a clear and welcoming arrival point. Bluestone references the heritage character of the public realm, while interior materials create a sense of warmth.

This building reflects Studio Bright’s careful approach to architecture, where craft, materiality and context shape design. With every element considered in relation to its wider context, the building feels grounded, purposeful and expressive. Layered massing creates depth and variation in materials and textures — giving the façade a presence that is both distinctive and respectful of its heritage surroundings.

Interiors
Studio Bright’s meticulous approach to design carries through seamlessly into interiors. With emphasis on craft, materiality and context, spaces are thoughtfully planned and generously proportioned.
The kitchens are designed for both daily living and entertaining, with a natural-stone island bench as their centrepiece.
Interiors open seamlessly to outdoor spaces, extending daily life into the open air. Landscaping softens and frames the terraces, ensuring dining areas feel both welcoming and adaptable — places equally suited to everyday meals or larger gatherings with family and friends.
An elegant extension of the living and entertaining areas, the bar is finished in natural stone with feature lighting and shelving for glassware.

Location
Progressive, creative and always evolving, Collingwood has long been one of our favourite neighbourhoods. This project is ideally placed on the periphery of this diverse cultural sphere, moments from both Smith and Gertrude Street's, various parks including Carlton and Fitzroy gardens, and in close proximity to the CBD.

This project was created in partnership with architecture and interior practice Studio Bright, and landscaping by Etched Projects. With both collaborators being Melbourne-based, the project benefits from their deep understanding of the area and its cultural context. Studio Bright’s innate knowledge of residential living is on full display across the buildings 22 dwellings.
